Four states in Australia still allow recreational duck hunting: Northern Territory, South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria. This is despite strong evidence of extreme suffering involved from the practice, and the community’s lack of support for duck shooting season. Victoria’s killing season starts on 26 May 2021.
Animal Australia’s mission to stop the shooting
AWC endorses Animal Australia’s campaign to stop duck shooting in Victoria. Despite community support to stop the shooting of ducks as a hunting sport, politicians are slow in responding with changing the laws.
Compounding the tragedy in Victoria’s wetland killing fields, 1 in 4 birds shot won’t die instantly — they may escape with shattered bills, fractured bones, broken wings, pellets through their eyes and gunshot lodged in vital organs.
Other animals on the wetlands that are not the intended target are also at risk of being shot.
How can we help?
Donations to support Animal Australia’s ‘They’re in Danger’ fundraising campaign will help air time of a TVC that raises awareness about duck shooting and why there should be a stop to the suffering. Although there is community support for the ceasing of shooting, the government is slow in acting to put a halt to duck shooting season.
